What is a healing abutment?

A healing abutment is a temporary implant component used while gum tissue heals around an implant. Where it sits and when it may be used.

A healing abutment is a temporary component that can be attached to a dental implant while the surrounding gum tissue heals.

It projects through the gum and helps maintain an opening and shape in the soft tissue above the implant.

Where does it sit?

The implant itself is placed in the jawbone.

A healing abutment is connected to the top of the implant and remains visible above the gum during the healing period.

It is not the final tooth and is not normally the final restorative abutment.

What does a healing abutment do?

Its main role is to guide and maintain the gum tissue around the implant while healing takes place.

This can make it easier to access the implant later when the definitive restoration is fitted.

The shape and size selected depend on the implant position and restorative plan.

Is a healing abutment always fitted immediately?

No.

There are different implant-healing approaches.

In some cases, the implant is covered by gum tissue during the initial healing period. A later minor procedure exposes the implant and a healing abutment is fitted.

In other cases, a healing abutment is attached at the time the implant is placed.

The approach depends on the clinical situation and treatment plan.

Is it the same as a temporary tooth?

No.

A healing abutment is a small component used at the implant site.

A temporary tooth or bridge is a restoration designed to replace the appearance or function of missing teeth during treatment.

They have different purposes.

Does a healing abutment stay permanently?

Usually not.

It is generally removed when the dentist is ready to proceed with impressions, digital scanning, a restorative abutment or the definitive prosthesis.

The exact sequence varies between implant systems and treatment plans.

What if it feels loose?

Do not repeatedly tighten, twist or test an implant component yourself.

If a healing abutment feels loose, comes out, or the area becomes painful or swollen, contact the treating clinic for advice.

Why might it appear on a treatment plan?

Some itemised treatment plans list healing abutments as individual implant components.

Others include them within the surgery or implant fee.

If you are comparing detailed quotes, check whether temporary and restorative components are included in the headline implant price.

In simple terms

A healing abutment is a temporary connector placed on an implant to help the gum heal in the required shape before the final restoration is completed.
