Compass Academy Understanding Your Quote

Dental Quote Comparison Checklist Before You Book

A 30-point checklist for comparing dental quotes before you book: scope, imaging, grafting, temporary teeth, components, travel, payments and aftercare — plus a table to compare three clinics side by side.
Patient and clinician comparing the different components of two dental treatment packages

Two dental quotes can show almost the same headline price and still describe very different treatment.

One may include CBCT, extractions, temporary teeth, graft material, membranes, a titanium bar, final zirconia teeth, hotel and transfers. Another may exclude several of those items or include them only up to a limit.

So before choosing a clinic, do not compare only the total.

Compare what the total actually buys.

1. Confirm whether you are comparing the same treatment

Start with the clinical scope.

Check:

  • upper arch, lower arch or both;
  • number of implants per arch;
  • implant brand/system if declared;
  • type of final restoration;
  • material of final teeth;
  • whether treatment is immediate or staged;
  • whether the quote assumes grafting is not required;
  • whether natural teeth are being retained or extracted.

If Clinic A quotes six implants and Clinic B quotes four, you are not comparing identical treatment.

That does not automatically make one better. It means the treatment plans need to be understood before the prices can be compared.

2. Is the quote an estimate or a final price?

Look for words such as:

  • estimate;
  • indicative price;
  • from;
  • starting at;
  • subject to examination;
  • subject to CBCT;
  • final plan after consultation.

A remote estimate can be useful, but you should know what can still change.

Ask exactly when the price becomes final.

3. Is consultation included?

Check whether the package includes:

  • remote consultation;
  • in-person consultation;
  • specialist consultation;
  • treatment planning appointment;
  • follow-up consultation.

A free consultation can still lead to paid diagnostic work, so check the next item too.

4. Is CBCT included?

Ask:

  • Is the first CBCT included?
  • Are additional scans charged separately?
  • Is CBCT repeated after implant placement?
  • Is another scan required before the final teeth?
  • Who owns or can access the scan data?

For complex implant treatment, several scans can be involved across the treatment journey.

“Free scan” does not necessarily mean every scan is free.

5. Are extractions included?

Check whether the package includes:

  • simple extractions;
  • surgical extractions;
  • retained roots;
  • impacted teeth;
  • a maximum number of extractions;
  • extraction of teeth on both arches.

Some packages include “all extractions”, others include only a set number, and others price each tooth separately.

6. How is bone grafting charged?

Do not accept only “bone graft included”.

Check:

  • whether grafting is included at all;
  • what type;
  • how many cc are included;
  • whether the allowance is per site, per arch or total;
  • additional cost per cc or pack;
  • whether membrane is included;
  • whether fixation is included;
  • whether sinus augmentation is separate;
  • whether there is an additional surgical fee.

A small included graft allowance is not the same as unlimited grafting.

7. What temporary teeth will you actually receive?

Check whether temporary teeth are:

  • fixed;
  • removable false teeth/dentures;
  • your existing denture modified;
  • one temporary per arch;
  • immediate or delayed;
  • subject to implant stability.

Also check:

  • material;
  • repair policy;
  • relines;
  • replacement cost;
  • what happens if fixed temporary teeth are not possible;
  • support after you return home.

8. What are the final teeth made from?

Terms such as “zirconia teeth” can still hide important differences.

Ask:

  • monolithic zirconia or layered?
  • full-arch bridge or separate units?
  • acrylic/PMMA, composite or zirconia?
  • titanium substructure or bar?
  • brand/system where relevant?
  • how the final restoration is retained?

The material description should match the actual restoration being supplied.

9. Is a titanium bar included?

For some full-arch restorations, a titanium bar or framework may be part of the design.

Ask:

  • whether a bar is used;
  • whether it is one per arch;
  • whether it is included in the package;
  • whether it is milled or another design;
  • whether the final zirconia/acrylic restoration is separate from the bar charge.

“Zirconia bridge included” does not automatically tell you whether a titanium framework is included.

10. Are abutments and prosthetic components included?

Implant pricing can be presented in different ways.

Check whether the quote includes:

  • multi-unit abutments;
  • healing abutments;
  • temporary cylinders;
  • screws;
  • final prosthetic components;
  • replacement components if something changes.

A low implant price may not represent the full restored implant cost.

11. Is sedation or anaesthesia included?

Check whether the planned treatment uses:

  • local anaesthetic;
  • oral sedation;
  • IV sedation;
  • general anaesthetic.

If sedation is optional, ask for the separate price.

12. What happens if the treatment plan changes?

Ask the clinic to state:

  • which items are fixed;
  • which are conditional;
  • which findings can increase the price;
  • when the final treatment plan is issued;
  • whether you approve changes before treatment proceeds.

A good quote should make uncertainty visible instead of hiding it.

13. Are laboratory fees included?

Check for:

  • temporary laboratory work;
  • final laboratory work;
  • digital design;
  • try-ins;
  • remake fees;
  • shade changes;
  • adjustments;
  • extra laboratory work caused by a changed treatment plan.

“Lab included” should be clear enough to understand.

14. How many visits are included?

For overseas treatment, ask:

  • how many trips are expected;
  • how many nights per trip;
  • how many clinic appointments;
  • whether an extra visit could be required;
  • who pays if healing requires an additional trip.

A cheaper package can become more expensive if another flight and hotel stay are needed.

15. Is accommodation really included?

If hotel is included, check:

  • number of nights;
  • room type;
  • whether breakfast is included;
  • whether a companion is included;
  • whether extra nights are chargeable;
  • what happens if treatment is delayed.

Do not assume “hotel included” means unlimited accommodation.

16. Are airport and clinic transfers included?

Check:

  • airport pickup;
  • airport return;
  • hotel-to-clinic transfers;
  • transfers for every appointment;
  • companion transport;
  • coverage if flights are delayed.

A package can say “VIP transfer included” while only covering two journeys.

17. What happens during aftercare?

Ask:

  • how long the clinic provides aftercare;
  • who answers urgent questions;
  • whether remote reviews are available;
  • whether repairs are included;
  • whether the clinic works with anyone locally;
  • whether you may need to return abroad;
  • who pays for travel if a return visit is necessary.

Aftercare should be compared before treatment, not after a problem develops.

18. What does the warranty actually cover?

A warranty can apply differently to:

  • implant fixture;
  • abutments;
  • bridge;
  • zirconia;
  • acrylic teeth;
  • titanium bar;
  • temporary teeth;
  • laboratory workmanship.

Check exclusions such as:

  • smoking;
  • poor oral hygiene;
  • missed maintenance;
  • trauma;
  • bruxism;
  • use of a night guard;
  • treatment by another dentist.

“Lifetime warranty” without written conditions is not enough information.

19. Is a night guard included?

For full-arch restorations, especially where grinding is a concern, a night guard may be recommended.

Check:

  • whether it is included;
  • whether one is supplied for each relevant arch;
  • replacement cost;
  • whether warranty depends on using it.

20. Are medicines included?

Check:

  • antibiotics;
  • pain relief;
  • mouth rinse;
  • prescriptions;
  • medications on the day of surgery.

Do not assume all post-operative medicines are part of the package.

21. What is not included?

This is one of the most valuable questions.

Ask the clinic to provide an exclusions list.

Examples:

  • complex grafting;
  • sinus lift;
  • surgical extraction;
  • sedation;
  • treatment of unexpected infection;
  • additional hotel nights;
  • extra scans;
  • temporary repairs;
  • return flights;
  • treatment by a local dentist after you return.

A clear exclusions list can be more useful than a long inclusions list.

22. What is capped or limited?

Look for limits such as:

  • up to 4 extractions;
  • up to 1 cc graft;
  • one temporary bridge;
  • two hotel nights;
  • one airport transfer;
  • one repair;
  • one CBCT.

The word “included” is incomplete unless you know the limit.

23. Is the clinic quoting in one currency?

Avoid comparing packages using mixed currencies without converting them consistently.

Check:

  • the currency of the quote;
  • whether payment is fixed in that currency;
  • whether exchange-rate changes affect the final amount;
  • card or bank-transfer fees.

24. What deposit is required?

Check:

  • deposit amount;
  • refund terms;
  • cancellation terms;
  • what happens if the treatment plan changes;
  • what happens if you are medically unable to proceed;
  • whether the deposit is transferable to a new date.

25. When is the balance due?

Ask whether payment is due:

  • before travel;
  • on arrival;
  • before surgery;
  • after surgery;
  • before the final restoration;
  • in stages.

Avoid paying more than necessary before the final treatment plan is clear.

26. Are there finance or card-payment surcharges?

Check:

  • credit card fee;
  • bank transfer fee;
  • finance interest;
  • currency conversion charge;
  • cash discount;
  • refund method.

The headline treatment price may not be the amount that leaves your bank account.

27. Who is actually providing the treatment?

Check:

  • treating dentist;
  • surgeon;
  • restorative dentist;
  • qualifications;
  • professional registration where applicable;
  • whether treatment is delivered at the clinic named in the quote.

A package is not only a list of materials. It is also a clinical service.

28. Can the clinic name the exact products it is quoting?

Where relevant, ask for:

  • implant system;
  • graft material;
  • membrane;
  • final restorative material;
  • temporary restorative material.

Brand names are not automatically better, but vague wording makes comparison harder.

29. Is the quote written clearly enough to keep?

Do not rely only on chat messages or phone calls.

Keep:

  • written quote;
  • treatment plan;
  • inclusions;
  • exclusions;
  • warranty;
  • payment terms;
  • refund terms;
  • clinic contact details.

If the plan changes, keep the revised version too.

30. Can you explain the quote back in your own words?

Before booking, you should be able to answer:

  • What treatment am I having?
  • How many implants?
  • What temporary teeth?
  • What final teeth?
  • What can cost extra?
  • When can the price change?
  • How many visits?
  • What happens if something breaks?
  • What happens after I return home?

If you cannot answer those questions from the quote, the quote is not clear enough yet.

The key point

A dental package should not be judged by one big number.

The cheapest headline price can be the most expensive option once excluded, capped and conditional items are added.

A better comparison asks:

What am I receiving, what can change, what is limited, what is excluded, and who pays when the treatment does not follow the perfect-case scenario?

Next step: Put competing quotes side by side and fill in the same fields for every clinic before you decide.
